Overuse injuries of the knee

Nicholas DeBellis, Guang-Ting Cong, Christopher Mikhail, James Gladstone

Abstract

There has been a steady increase in youth sports participation over the past several years. While there are many health and psychosocial benefits to this trend, it has also been associated with higher rates of injury. Weight bearing joints in the lower extremity, especially the knee, are most vulnerable to both acute and chronic overuse type injuries. This review will focus on the latter as overuse injuries are more prevalent and will almost be encountered by any type of clinician who treats pediatric patients.
