Furthermore, it can monitor uniquely and quantitatively how diseases correlate with the biochemical composition, distribution and alignment. This work will review the applications and developments of FTIRI in the articular cartilage (AC) and osteoarthritis (OA), which include the structural (anisotropy) detection and content distributions of principal components, the cartilage degeneration and the consequent changes in the structure and the component distribution, evaluation and identification of the healthy and osteoarthritic cartilages at different degeneration stages. It will be helpful for improving our understanding of the complex processes in the variations of molecular composition, distribution and structure even morphology in AC at different degeneration stages, accelerating the early finding, early prevention and effective therapy of cartilage diseases.
