Shiro Ikegawa, MD, PhD (Basic Research)

Dr. Ikegawa, a specialist in orthopaedic surgery, is the head of the Laboratory for Bone and Joint Diseases at the RIKEN Center for IMS (Integrated Medical Sciences), as well as the Director of Japanese Society of Human Genetics.
Dr. Ikegawa earned his MD and Ph.D. from Faculty of Medicine, Univ. Tokyo. From 1991 to 1995, Dr. Ikegawa worked as a surgeon and became a Chief surgeon in 1992 at the Department of Orthopaedics, National Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children (NRCDC). He was the Assistant Professor of Institute of Medical Science, Univ. Tokyo(1995-2000). At present, he is the the head of the Laboratory for Bone and Joint Diseases, RIKEN Center for IMS (Integrated Medical Sciences).His other appointments include being the Director of Japanese Society of Human Genetics; Executive Board member, EAUHGS (East Asian Union of Human Genetics; Honorary professor, Dept. Biochemistry, Hong Kong Univ; Visiting professor, Yokohama City Univ; Visiting professor, Taipei Medical School; Concurrent professor, School of Medicine, Nanjing Univ; Visiting lecturer, Hiroshima Univ. Dental. School; Visiting lecturer. Kyoto Univ, Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences etc. In 2009, he was appointed by the Raine Medical Foundation, Univ. of Western Australia as the Raine Visiting Professorship. He has been awarded the Basic Research Award in 2012 and Japan Society of Human Genetics Award,and RIKEN Center for IMS Award in 2013.
