Haruhiko Akiyama, MD, PhD (Orthopaedic Surgery)

Dr. Akiyama, a specialist in orthopaedic surgery, is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at Gifu University. 

Dr. Akiyama graduated from Kyoto University in 1988. In 1988 he joined the Department of Orthopaedics of Kyoto University. He earned his MD and PhD from Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University. In 1999, he joined the Department of Molecular Genetics of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Benoit de Crombrugghe’s lab., and became Assistant Professor at the Department of Molecualr Genetics/Department of Orthopaedics. He returned to Kyoto University in 2004 and became Professor and Chairman of Gifu University in 2013. He is a specialist in joint surgery, and his research interests lie in the area of cartilage biology and pathology with specific interest in the molecular mechanisms of chondrogenesis and osteoarthritis. He is a member of the International Hip Society from 2011. He has been awarded American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the Japanese Orthopaedic Association, the Japanese Society for Bone and Mineral Research, and the Japanese Society of Cartilage Metabolism.
