Carola F. van Eck, MD PhD (orthopaedic sports medicine)

Dr. Carola F. van Eck was born and raised in the Netherlands and earned her medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in 2008. She joined Dr. Freddie H. Fu and his research team at the University of Pittsburgh as a post-doctoral research associate. Her research efforts resulted in a PhD degree in 2011 under Dr. C. Niek van Dijk. She stayed at the University of Pittsburgh for her orthopaedic residency training, which she successfully completed in June of 2016. She is currently pursuing a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, California under the direction of Dr. Neal ElAttrache. 

Dr. van Eck’s major research interests lie in the field of orthopaedic sports medicine and specifically anatomic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. However, she has also been involved in both basic science and clinical research in other fields of orthopaedic surgery such as spine, trauma, arthroplasty, oncology and more. Her research efforts have resulted in 8 awards and honors, 46 national and international presentations, and 89 peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed publications and book chapters. 

Dr. van Eck serves as an Editorial Board Member of Knee Surgery Sports Traumatology Arthroscopy (KSSTA), the official journal of the European Society of Sports Traumatology Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA). She is also the Sports Medicine Section Editor of Asia-Pacific Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Rehabilitation and Technology (AP-SMART), the official journal of the Asia Pacific Knee, Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Society. She sits on the Editorial Board of Annals of Joint (AOJ). And she is a member of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) Social Media Advisory Board. She also serves as a peer reviewer for these journals as well as for the Physician Sports Medicine (P&SM), the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM), Postgraduate Medicine, Journal of Sports Sciences, and Sport & Geneeskunde (the Flemish/Dutch Journal of Sports Medicine and Sports Science). She is an active member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS), the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS), ESSKA, the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Dutch Arthroscopy Society (NVA), the American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), AO Trauma, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee surgery and Orthopaedic Sports medicine (ISAKOS), the American Orthopaedic Association's (AOA) Emerging Leaders Program, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). 

However, Dr. van Eck’s true passion is to be a team physician. She has served on the medical team for several Pittsburgh area high schools, including Elizabeth Forward High School and Deer Lakes High School Football, and for the past two seasons she has been assistant team physician for the Pittsburgh Passion Professional Women’s Tackle Football team, who have won the national championship two years in a row.
